As an Adult, going through this process could have been arduous, but it was made extremely easy. I found Dr. Seamus was sympathetic and structured the appointments to suit me. The report was with me the next day so no waiting. Getting appointments was fast and no waiting period. I definitely recommend AutismCare. Now I know I an Autistic I can move on.

Both myself and my daughter have had a great experience with AutismCare. We first went for OT for my daughter. She absolutely adored her sessions with Ciaran. She looked forward to it every week. Ciaran made my daughter feel understood and helped her to process her diagnoses by consistently communicating with her in a way that met her needs and communication style. Ciaran also shared his brilliant insight with me each week which helped us as parents to best support our daughter. I booked in for an adult AUDHD assessment for myself and found Dr Janice fantastic. She made me feel at ease in every session. She was so helpful throughout and answered any questions I had. Following my diagnosis she provided lots of information on further steps and supports. Everyone I interacted with whether by email, online or in person was so helpful and pleasant. I highly recommend AutismCare.

I had a really positive experience with Autism Care Ireland and Dr. Seamus Ryan. The process was straightforward and efficient, I appreciated that there's an initial assessment to determine whether further consultation is needed, which felt like a respectful use of everyone's time. From there, appointments were booked quickly and each session was an hour or less, which I found manageable. Dr. Ryan was professional throughout, and I received my diagnosis in approximately one month from the initial assessment, a turnaround I hadn't expected to be so prompt. For anyone on the fence about seeking a diagnosis as an adult: I spent my whole life masking and feeling like something was off without knowing why. Getting that clarity has been such a relief. It's far better to know than not to know, and I'm genuinely delighted with my outcome. I'd highly recommend Autism Care Ireland to anyone navigating this process.

I had a recent autism assessment with Dr. Seamus Daly at Autism Care and found the experience extremely positive. He was professional, calm, and very knowledgeable, particularly around autism in adults and the impact of masking. The assessment was thorough but felt supportive and respectful throughout. I came away with a much clearer understanding of my diagnosis and felt genuinely listened to. I would highly recommend Dr. Daly to anyone seeking an adult autism assessment.

Had a genuinely great experience with these folks! It was the fastest referral > appointment > diagnosis I've heard about in years, especially for an adult diagnosis. Lisa worked with me through the whole process and was very patient and informative every step of the way. I never once felt out of my depth in any way, and when the time came for a diagnosis, everything was explained to me including processes and reasoning. Couldn't recommend AutismCare more, they were great and helped me take a massive step forward in my life!

We were delighted to obtain a prompt and comprehensive psychological assessment for an adult diagnosis. We had a tight timeline to have everything completed and the Autism Society kindly expedited our request graciously. We were impressed with the clear instructions and nothing was ever a problem. I would strongly recommend this service to anyone.

Your Questions Answered

About the Assessment

Who conducts the assessment at AutismCare?
A chartered clinical psychologist specialising in autism and broader neurodiversity assessment leads your assessment, sometimes paired with another specialist if deemed necessary by the clinical psychologist.
Is the assessment online or in person?
Adult assessments at AutismCare are usually conducted entirely online, giving you flexibility and comfort. You don't need to travel; sessions are held via secure video conferencing.
What age range does AutismCare's adult autism assessment cover?
Our adult assessment applies to individuals aged 18 and over.
What if I already have other diagnoses when undergoing an adult autism assessment?
AutismCare takes a holistic view during an adult autism assessment. Any existing diagnoses, such as anxiety, ADHD, or mood conditions, are integrated into the evaluation, and the report explains how they interact with autistic features. Your report will reflect how these interact with autistic features and suggest pathways accordingly.
What diagnostic criteria and tools does AutismCare use?
We use recognised frameworks (e.g. DSM-5) and validated clinical assessment instruments alongside detailed interviews, self-report measures, developmental history, and clinical observation via video.
Does AutismCare have a waitlist?
First appointment available within 3 days. We aim to complete the full adult autism assessment process within 3 weeks.
Will adult autism assessment highlight my strengths as well as challenges?
Absolutely. Our philosophy is neuroaffirmative - we acknowledge and help you address the challenges of being autistic in a world which doesn't always accommodate your needs, but we also help you in identifying your cognitive, social, sensory, and adaptive strengths, special interests, and preferred ways of interacting.

Recognition & Support

Is an AutismCare adult autism diagnosis accepted by public bodies and health systems in Ireland?
Yes. All our psychologists are professionally qualified and registered (e.g. with PSI), which means that your diagnosis is recognised under Irish systems for accessing support.
Can I use an autism assessment report for workplace or educational accommodations?
Yes. After your assessment, you'll receive a detailed report and can request supporting letters to present to employers, universities, or services.
Does private health insurance cover adult autism assessment?
Often yes, depending on your insurer. We supply all required documentation (PSI numbers, receipts, clinical codes) to support your claim.
Can I claim tax relief on adult autism assessment?
Potentially yes. Many clients may claim ~20% back on health-related expenses from Revenue. We provide full invoices and registration numbers to support your claim.
What happens after receiving an adult autism diagnosis?
You'll receive a detailed feedback session and a full comprehensive written report. The report includes tailored recommendations (therapy, workplace accommodations, self-management strategies) and can serve as a roadmap for next steps. We also offer support aftercare services at AutismCare.
Can autistic adults access disability supports?
Yes in some cases. Depending on their functional impacts, individuals may qualify for supports such as Disability Allowance or other social welfare schemes. We can advise you on documentation needed. Disability Allowance is a weekly social welfare payment from the Department of Social Protection for individuals aged 16 or over who have a disability that substantially restricts their ability to take part in work that would otherwise be suitable for someone of their age, experience, and qualifications. Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference, not a mental illness or cognitive impairment. Disability Allowance is not a judgment on a person's abilities or potential. Instead, it is a form of support that can help individuals with a disability navigate daily life and access the resources they need to thrive. For up-to-date information on eligibility criteria, how to apply, and what documentation is required, you can visit the Citizens Information website: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social-welfare/disability-and-illness/
Who oversees quality and standards at AutismCare?
All clinical processes, standards and assessments are supervised by our Clinical Director, Dr Sam Gower. Dr Gower is a Clinical Psychologist with over 17 years experience registered both in Ireland and the UK. Dr Gower has previously held senior Clinical Director roles in the NHS, Pieta House and also held roles as Principal Clinical Psychologist for a number of clinics that specialise in the deliverance of services for adults and children with intellectual disability, autism and or acquired brain injury, who may also have other complex needs including mental health difficulties. All clinical staff at AutismCare must meet stringent professional and educational standards, be appropriately certified by their respective professional bodies and hold specialised training in autism, along with continuous professional development requirements. AutismCare also is governed by a Board of Directors and undertakes external independent healthcare audits once every two years.

Process & Timeline

What is the first step in adult autism assessment?
The AutismCare adult autism assessment begins with a pre-assessment consultation, approximately 60 minutes, held via video call. This involves an initial discussion of your history, concerns, and whether a full assessment is suitable.
How long does the full assessment take?
From first contact to delivery of the report, the process typically takes 3 weeks.
What does the AutismCare diagnosis process actually involve?
• Pre-assessment consultation (video) • Completion of questionnaires, background/developmental history • Assessment sessions (interviews, observational tasks via video) • Feedback session and report delivery • Post-assessment recommendations and support planning
How many sessions are involved in adult autism assessment?
Usually 4 sessions spread over several weeks with clinical questionnaires to be filled out as required separately to these sessions.
Do I need to submit prior reports or records for an adult autism assessment?
It is recommended if you have prior psychological, neurological, or developmental assessments, medical records, or reports, these help inform your evaluation and avoid redundant testing.
Do I need a GP referral for adult autism assessment?
While referrals from GP's are accepted, no referral is required. You can self-refer. We begin with a pre-assessment consultation.
Does the process involve both video observation and self-report?
Yes. We combine structured interview, observational behaviour (via video), and validated questionnaires/self-report tools to get a comprehensive view. If you would like to use fidgets, stim, include a pet or use text chat where needed this can also help some individuals throughout the process.
Can a partner or family member join sessions during an adult autism assessment?
Yes. You may invite a trusted person (partner, family, friend) to join parts of sessions or to provide collateral input, if you prefer.

Practical Information

How much does an adult assessment cost?
The AutismCare full adult assessment is €1,487 when you pay up front, saving you €200, or €1,687 if you pay as you go. Both prices include your €89 pre-assessment consultation. Payment plans are available to support accessibility.
Is there a payment plan available for adult autism assessment?
Yes. Paying up front costs €1,487 and saves you €200. You book and pay for the €89 pre-assessment on its own first; if the full assessment is right for you, you then pay the remaining €1,398 in one go. If you'd rather pay as you go, you pay for each stage as you reach it and can split any stage into 3 interest-free instalments with Klarna.
When will I receive the report?
Final written reports are typically delivered within a few days (or up to 1–2 weeks) after the feedback session, depending on complexity.
How is privacy handled during adult autism assessment?
We maintain strict confidentiality. Sessions are encrypted, and data is stored securely in compliance with data protection laws.
Are AutismCare a credible service?
Yes. All our clinical staff involved in the adult assessment process are fully qualified and registered with their respective professional bodies. Our reports are recognised by Irish systems (e.g. HSE, Department of Education). AutismCare are also an approved HSE Service Provider.
What equipment do I need for adult autism assessment?
A stable internet connection, a computer or tablet with camera and microphone, and a private quiet space are all that's required.

Understanding Adult Autism

Who should consider an adult autism assessment?
If you suspect you are autistic or otherwise neurodivergent, and you are seeking confirmation of this, the assessment and identification process is for you. People choose to go through assessment for various reasons. For some people it helps them make sense of their past experiences, it helps them deepen their understanding of their self and their needs. Also formal assessment can help in getting reasonable accommodations in the workplace. We collaborate with you in exploring how your interests, sensory experience, interaction or communication style fits with descriptions of autistic experience. We undertake that autism is an identity and not just a set of characteristics.
Can autism be missed until adulthood?
Yes. Many adults "mask" traits or make accommodations that hide their autistic profile. A comprehensive assessment can uncover underlying patterns even when previous life functioning has covered it. Also our understanding of autism has changed over the years as autistic research has caught up with autistic people's discussions of their experiences. We no longer think of autism in terms of "deficits" but see it as a different way of experiencing the world.
What happens if assessment does not identify autism?
You will still receive a full report outlining your cognitive, behavioral, emotional profile, and suggestions for supports or alternative diagnoses if relevant.
Will an adult autism assessment change how I see myself?
Often yes. Many clients say the process offers pathways to self-understanding, acceptance, and reframing experiences in a more compassionate light.
Does autism run in families?
Yes, there is a strong genetic component. Many adults discover family members with related traits once assessed.
