I was concerned that my high masking son would not be himself in the interview but the team were amazing and he was completely relaxed and himself. When we left he said “well that was fun!” Luis and Kate were wonderful from start to finish and for the first time I felt like someone was really listening. They were great at communicating the whole process and the report is invaluable in helping us support our son moving forward. Wish I had come to Autism Care sooner. Thanks so much to the whole team.

Both myself and my daughter have had a great experience with AutismCare. We first went for OT for my daughter. She absolutely adored her sessions with Ciaran. She looked forward to it every week. Ciaran made my daughter feel understood and helped her to process her diagnoses by consistently communicating with her in a way that met her needs and communication style. Ciaran also shared his brilliant insight with me each week which helped us as parents to best support our daughter. I booked in for an adult AUDHD assessment for myself and found Dr Janice fantastic. She made me feel at ease in every session. She was so helpful throughout and answered any questions I had. Following my diagnosis she provided lots of information on further steps and supports. Everyone I interacted with whether by email, online or in person was so helpful and pleasant. I highly recommend AutismCare.

I was very happy to come across this team of specialists. No fuss, all done professionally and my 6 y.o.son saw all the tests as a play rather then serious testing. Andreana and Ciaran were amazing. I would highly recommend it to everyone seeking autism assessment privately.

I’d very highly recommend Autism Care. The service is second to none, amazing experience throughout. Dr Jade Walsh the psychologist was absolutely lovely, extremely professional and so lovely to deal with and we had Ciaran the OT who was so lovely and made my 14 year old feel so relaxed. The girls who answered the phones were so lovely, they couldn’t do enough to help us. Thank you to all involved in my daughter’s care. I’d definitely recommend Autism Care 110%

Assessment done in about 10 weeks. No hassle. Andreana and caolán were amazing to deal with. I was worried that my daughter wouldn't speak as she generally shuts down with people she doesn't know but caolán especially made her feel comfortable as he was very like her brother. My daughter was 17 being diagnosed and I found it hard to find a company that didnt rely highly on info from the school as she was in secondary school and another company told me that if they school didnt notice anything the assessment would stop. Autism Care look more closely at family life as family notice the struggles more. I highly recommend autism care.

Dr. Molly conducted my son Alex’s autism assessment, and I cannot express enough gratitude for the experience we had with her. From the very beginning, she approached the process with exceptional knowledge, empathy, and genuine care. It was clear that she not only understands autism from a professional perspective but that her own experiences allow her to connect with children and families on a much deeper level. Throughout the assessment, she made both my son and me feel comfortable, supported, and truly heard. Her kindness, patience, and compassionate approach created a safe space where Alex could simply be himself. What could have been a stressful process instead felt thoughtful, respectful, and reassuring. Dr. Molly’s dedication to her work is very evident. You can tell that this is not just a profession for her but a true calling. She has a sincere desire to make a positive difference in the lives of the families she works with, and that shines through in every interaction. She is an incredible professional and a real asset to her field. I feel very fortunate that Alex’s assessment was carried out by someone so knowledgeable, empathetic, and kind-hearted. I would wholeheartedly recommend her to any family going through a similar journey.

I had an incredibly positive experience with AutismCare. From start to finish, the entire process felt compassionate, respectful, and deeply validating. I’m especially grateful to Dr. Seamus Ryan, Aishling Guerin, and the wider team for the care and professionalism they brought to my assessment. I felt genuinely listened to and understood throughout. Receiving my diagnosis has completely changed how I understand myself and my life. I feel like I finally have the right framework to understand who I am and what support I need. The report itself was detailed, thoughtful, and practical, with recommendations that ware personal and empowering rather than generic. It was honestly one of the most validating and healing experiences I’ve had. I cannot thank the team enough for the humanity and integrity they bring to their work. Highly recommend to anyone considering an assessment.

The in person assesment was so calm. The feedback we received about our son was all really positive and so lovely to hear. Thank you so much Luis xx

My son and I met with Luis and Kate recently for an autism assessment. They were both so kind and gentle with my son, they understood his challenges and did so much to help him regain his confidence in himself. My son is in his late teens so going through the process of assessment was difficult for him, Luis and Kate were both very empathetic and focussed very much on the positives of a diagnosis. Their report was clear, concise and gave good advice on supports that can be implemented at home and at school. Overall, they made the whole process easier and being able to attend for assessment locally was a huge bonus. I'd have no hesitation in recommending Autism Care, especially Luis and Kate. Thank you both! Rosemary, Cork.

I’ve used AutismCare for an ASD assessment for my 9 year old son. We went through the process with Luis and Rachel. Luis did the ASD assessment and put my son at ease from the start. He is very helpful and answers any questions I had. He was calm and friendly with my son who was nervous. We met Rachel the S&L therapist as part of assessment and went on to book her for S&L therapy for my 4 year old non verbal son. Rachel was lovely and my son got on with Rachel straight away. She is very calm and goes at the child’s pace. I would highly recommend the clinic to any future clients. Had a genuinely great experience with these folks! It was the fastest referral > appointment > diagnosis I've heard about in years, especially for an adult diagnosis. Lisa worked with me through the whole process and was very patient and informative every step of the way. Before deciding on Autism Care I'd looked at a number of clinics for my child's assessment. I knew I wanted the leading assessment tools to be used and that the psychologists being PSI chartered was a must. Autism Care ticked all of these boxes. The process was smooth and I was made clear of each stage of the process along the way. Dr Jill's care, attention and professionalism was noteworthy and I would have no hesitation in recommending this clinic.

I can’t recommend AutismCare highly enough! After a disappointing experience with a previous assessment provider, I was initially very skeptical, especially when I saw that AutismCare offered an appointment within the same week, whereas other places had long waiting lists. But from the very first appointment in January, my experience was fantastic. The team was not only professional but also extremely kind and patient with both me and my son. They took the time to explain everything thoroughly, ensuring I understood every step of the process. The assessment was structured in four stages, with payment made per stage, which felt very transparent and fair. What impressed me most was that I received the final report exactly as promised on February 5th. The whole process was smooth and efficient, and I truly felt supported throughout. Luis was particularly wonderful in explaining the report in detail, which gave me clarity and peace of mind. A huge thank you to the team for their dedication and care. I’m so grateful for their support and would recommend them without hesitation!

I am lost for words with the gratitude I feel towards everyone who has helped me at autism care especially John and Mark. I hounded them with questions and they were always just the other end of the phone. Everything was done so well and professionally while also explaining in laymans terms. Im so relieved to finally have the answers I needed in regards to my daughter and now be able to get help for her that wasn't available to me without a diagnosis. I highly recommend.

Autism Care is an excellent service. Luis the Psychologist who worked with my son was professional and empathic and the whole process from Pre assessment to a final diagnosis was very user friendly and efficient.Luis put my son at ease and the fact that the assessment took place over Zoom really suited him. Another big advantage was that there was no long waiting lists and the assessment took place over a few weeks. One of the main reasons that I was drawn to Autism Care is that the diagnosis is accepted by the HSE. The report and recommendations were very helpful to my son and also to me and his family as we move forward together. Finally I want to thank John who was always at the end of the phone. I wish you all every success in your new venture.

Excellent service super professional and efficient. Dr Hugo is a pleasure to deal with and made the entire process as comfortable and easy as possible. His knowledge, expertise and empathetic nature really shone through. It can be a lengthy and difficult journey to get an ASD diagnosis especially for a child but Autism Care and especially Hugo really supported us as a family throughout the entire process ensuring we had the correct information and recommendations that we required. It’s super to have a service like this available in Ireland and would highly recommend them to anyone who requires this service.

About the Assessment

Who conducts a child autism assessment?
We use a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) model for what's sometimes referred to as a child neurodiversity assessment. Two or more clinicians specialising in child and adolescent autism conduct your child's assessment using internationally recognised evidence-based tools and observational methods in line with best practice for Ireland. Our MDT teams always consist of a chartered clinical psychologist specialising in autism assessments paired with either a speech and language therapist or occupational therapist also specialising in autism assessments.
Is the assessment done online or in person?
For Donegal families, the main part of the assessment is done in person in Letterkenny. The pre-assessment, parent interviews, questionnaires and feedback session are done online. We also have clinics in Rathfarnham (Dublin), Blackpool (Cork City), Castletroy (Limerick) and Kilkenny City if one of those suits you better.
Do we need to travel to Dublin for the assessment?
No. The in-person part of your child's assessment takes place at our Letterkenny clinic in Riverfront House, Pearse Rd. The pre-assessment, parent consultation and feedback session are all held online, so most families only make one trip.
Which parts of Donegal do you cover?
We see children from across County Donegal, including Letterkenny, Buncrana, Donegal Town, Ballybofey, Stranorlar, Bundoran, Dungloe and the Inishowen peninsula. Call us on 01 691 7844 if you're not sure whether the Letterkenny assessment suits you.
What age should my child be assessed for autism?
We can assess children from 2 years old up to 18 years old. Reliable diagnosis is possible from age 2–3, and there is no upper age limit for children and adolescents. Earlier assessment means earlier support—helping your child access the understanding and resources they need sooner.
Can a GP diagnose autism in Ireland?
In Ireland, GPs do not diagnose autism. Autism assessments and diagnoses are carried out by clinical or educational chartered psychologists, psychiatrists, or multidisciplinary teams. A GP can be helpful in recognising autistic traits and supporting a referral, but a GP referral is not required. You can self-refer directly to AutismCare for an assessment.
What if my child has other conditions alongside autism?
We integrate information about co-occurring conditions (e.g. ADHD, anxiety, learning differences) into our assessment. Our report presents a holistic profile, your child's strengths, challenges, and overlapping conditions, and recommended next steps and/or referral pathways if required.
What diagnostic criteria and tools are used for child autism assessment?
We use gold-standard, HSE-recognised assessment methods:
  • DSM-5 criteria: The internationally recognised diagnostic framework
  • ADOS-2: Play-based observation tool
  • ADI-R: Comprehensive parent interview about developmental history
  • Clinical observation: Expert assessment across interaction and behaviour
Will assessment highlight my child's strengths too?
Yes. One of our guiding principles is neuroaffirmative practice: we present not just challenges, but your child's preferred ways of interacting, special interests, and capabilities.

Recognition & Support

Is your diagnosis accepted by schools?
Yes. Our diagnoses are widely recognised and can be used to support Student Support Plans, IEPs, and access to resource teaching or SNA support where applicable. AutismCare are also an approved HSE service provider.
Can I use the report for RACE / DARE / exam accommodations?
Yes - our comprehensive reports meet standards for exam accommodations (RACE) and for DARE / higher education applications, where clinically relevant. Our clinical and administrative team can provide assistance here as required.
What happens after a child receives an autism diagnosis?
You'll receive a detailed feedback session (online) and a comprehensive written report. Together with your clinician, you'll discuss recommendations, therapies (speech & language, occupational therapy), school planning, support at home, and community resources.
How does an autism diagnosis support my child’s education?
It clarifies for teachers and school staff how your child learns, communicates, and regulates. This understanding can guide accommodations (e.g. structured breaks, alternate presentation of content, sensory supports) and formal supports (IEPs, supports hours).
Can an autistic child qualify for disability support?
Yes. Under Irish systems, autism can qualify as a disability in certain contexts. You may be eligible for support or benefits, consult with your local social services for specifics and this can be discussed directly with our clinical team. Further information can also be found by searching the supports listed here: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social-welfare/.

Process & Timeline

How do I get started with a child autism assessment?
You begin by booking a pre-assessment session with a psychologist. This is a 60-minute remote consultation with parents only—your child does not attend this first session. The cost is €89, and appointments are typically available within 7 days. This exploratory conversation helps determine if a full assessment is right for your child, with no obligation to continue.
How long does a full child autism assessment take?
From first contact to final report, the full process is usually completed within 8 to 10 weeks with all required inputs from parents completed.
What are the steps included in a child autism assessment?
  • Pre-assessment / discovery session (parents only)
  • Parental consultation (developmental history, questionnaires)
  • In-person child assessment in Letterkenny (observation, interaction tasks)
  • Feedback & report presentation (online with parents)
  • Ongoing support and therapeutic interventions
Typically, the in-person child assessment lasts approximately 2 hours, depending on the child's engagement level and need for breaks.
Do you involve school staff?
Yes. with your permission, we request teacher questionnaires or observations to complement and provide a comprehensive picture across settings.
Do both parents need to attend consultations?
We require that at least one parent or guardian attend all stages. Where possible, both parents should attend the pre-assessment and feedback sessions, as these discussions are crucial for shared understanding and next steps.
What should I expect in the initial consultation?
You'll discuss your concerns, your child's developmental history, and how they engage socially and emotionally. Your clinician will determine whether a full assessment is appropriate.
How should I prepare my child?
Explain that they'll do some fun, low-pressure tasks or play with someone who is trying to understand how they think and interact. Ensure they're rested and not anxious.
Are assessments done in person?
Yes. For Donegal families, the child’s direct assessment is in person in Letterkenny. Parent interviews and feedback are online.
Will my child be observed across multiple settings?
We rely on parent and teacher input plus direct clinic observation. In some cases, additional observation in natural settings may be considered if needed.
Can you assess autism if my child has already been assessed elsewhere?
Yes. Our clinicians regularly complete second opinions or follow-up assessments where previous results were inconclusive or limited. We review all prior reports before proceeding.
What if my child does not engage during the assessment?
Our clinicians are experienced in working with children who may feel unsure, anxious, or reluctant. Assessments are:
  • Flexible and child-led
  • Play-based where appropriate
  • Adapted to your child's pace and needs
  • Structured with breaks as needed
If a child finds it hard to engage, this in itself can provide helpful information for the assessment. If needed, sessions can be paused or rescheduled. There is no right or wrong way for a child to take part, and no child can "fail" an assessment.
Can you assess a non-verbal child for autism?
Yes, we assess children who use little or no spoken language. Our approach includes:
  • Use of ADOS-2 modules designed for minimally verbal children
  • Detailed parent or caregiver interviews
  • Careful observation across play and interaction
  • Play-based methods that do not rely on spoken language
Communication is understood in many forms, including gestures, actions, facial expression, and interaction styles.

Understanding Autism

What signs suggest my child might need an autism assessment?
Some signs include differences in how your child communicates or interacts with others (preferring to avoid eye contact, or making intensive eye contact' to account for 'overstarers', flapping or stimming, speaking at length about passions and interests, or preferring solitary play). Having very focused passions and interests can be a sign. Having noticeable preferences in relation to senses (seeking or avoiding certain sensations) is another main characteristic. No two autistic children are alike, so the presence or absence of any of the above does not necessarily determine if your child is autistic. These are however characteristics which autistic children and adults often share.
How may autism show up in young children?
Early signs of autism in young children may include:
  • Limited or unusual eye contact
  • Speech or language delays
  • Repetitive behaviours (hand flapping, lining up toys)
  • Sensory sensitivities (to sounds, textures, lights)
  • Difficulty with changes in routine
Every child is different, and the presence or absence of these signs doesn't definitively indicate autism—a professional assessment provides clarity.
What is the difference between autism and ADHD?
While autism and ADHD can look similar, they have distinct characteristics:
  • Autism: Differences in social communication, interaction styles, and repetitive behaviours or focused interests
  • ADHD: Difficulties with attention, focus, and may include hyperactivity or impulsivity
These conditions can co-occur—research suggests 30–50% of autistic individuals also have ADHD. Our assessment process can identify both if present.
Why is early assessment important?
Early identification lets your child grow up with an implicit understanding that their autistic communication, interaction and sensory preferences are valid. It allows you to support them in framing the way they navigate the world as a neurodivergent person in a strengths-focused light from a young age, and mitigate the impact that navigating allistic (non-autistic) oriented spaces can have on your young person's self image and wellbeing.
Can autism be confused with other conditions?
Yes. Characteristics can overlap with ADHD, anxiety, language disorders, and more. That's why a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive approach is essential.
What if my child is not diagnosed with autism?
You'll still receive a full report outlining observations and recommendations regarding other potential needs or supports or referral pathways indicated if clinically indicated.
Can the assessment give insight even without a positive diagnosis?
Yes. The process helps clarify how your child learns, senses, thinks, and interacts—information useful even in absence of diagnosis.
What does "neuroaffirmative" mean?
It means accepting that there is a large variation among the kinds of nervous systems people have. Some people experience the world in the way a majority of people do, others have characteristics and ways of experiencing which are less common. But this does not mean that one way of experiencing the world is "better" or than the other. Neuroaffirmative practice acknowledges and affirms differences without making moral judgements on what is "correct" or "normal".
Does it mean my child's support needs will be overlooked?
No. Neuroaffirmative practice ensures that your child's experiences are understood and validated by others. We can not, and will not try to make your child less autistic or to appear less autistic. We will help you advocate for your child accessing the appropriate supports for them. These will be individualised to meet your child's needs.
Do you teach "social skills"? Why not?
Autistic and non-autistic (or "allistic") children have different ways of communicating and interacting which work for them. Social skills interventions are typically devised to teach autistic children to appear less autistic. This promotes masking and camouflaging which is bad for self esteem and increases autistic people's marginalization.
