Speech and Language Therapy FAQ's

About Speech & Language Therapy

What is Speech and Language Therapy (SLT)?
SLT at AutismCare isn't just about "fixing" speech. We help you find the communication method that feels most natural to your child.

We support:
  • Spoken language
  • Gestures and sign language (Lámh)
  • Visuals and picture boards
  • Communication apps (AAC)
Our goal is to give your child the tools to express themselves confidently in whatever way works best for them.
Who provides SLT at AutismCare?
All sessions are delivered by CORU-registered Speech and Language Therapists. Every therapist holds specialist training in autism and social communication.

They work closely with our psychologists and occupational therapists to ensure your child receives consistent support across the board.
What areas can SLT help with?
  • Understanding spoken language (Receptive language)
  • Expressing needs and thoughts (Expressive language)
  • Speech clarity and articulation
  • AAC: using apps or pictures to communicate
  • Social confidence: advocating for oneself
  • Feeding and swallowing difficulties (if relevant)
Is SLT done in person or online?
Both options are available.

In-Person: Best for hands-on work, play-based therapy, and AAC setup. Available at our clinics in Rathfarnham (Dublin) and Blackpool (Cork).
Online: Effective for parent coaching, social communication strategies, and older children/adults.
What age ranges do you support?
We support children, adolescents, and adults.

Therapy is tailored to the life stage—whether that’s play skills for a toddler, social confidence for a teen, or workplace advocacy for an adult.
Will therapy focus on strengths as well as challenges?
Yes - absolutely.

We don't try to "teach the right way" to communicate. Instead, we build on your child's existing strengths.

If your child loves drawing, we use that for communication. If they are passionate about a specific topic, we use that to build connection. We help them self-advocate rather than just "fitting in."

Recognition & Support

Is SLT recognised by schools and the HSE?
Yes. AutismCare is an approved HSE service provider. Our reports and recommendations are recognised by:
  • The Department of Education
  • Schools (for IEPs and support plans)
  • The HSE
Can SLT support school or workplace accommodations?
Yes. Our reports can be used to support:
  • Student Support Plans & IEPs
  • Access to SNA support
  • Exam accommodations (RACE/DARE)
  • Workplace adjustments (e.g., written instructions instead of verbal)
Is SLT covered by private health insurance?
Often yes. It depends on your specific plan. We provide all the necessary documentation you need to claim, including:
  • CORU registration numbers
  • PSI numbers
  • Formal receipts
Can I claim tax relief?
Yes. You can typically claim 20% of the cost back from Revenue under the health expenses relief scheme. We provide the receipts required for this.

Process & Timeline

How do I begin speech and language therapy?
You can self-refer directly via our website. You do not need a doctor's referral. We start with an initial consultation to understand your goals and priorities.
What does the process look like?
  • Initial Consultation: Meeting with parents/client to set goals.
  • Baseline Assessment: Understanding current communication styles.
  • Therapy Sessions: Tailored work (e.g., language games, AAC setup).
  • Reviews: Regular progress updates and home support plans.
How long are sessions?
Typical sessions last 45 to 60 minutes. We can arrange shorter sessions for younger children or those with sensory needs who may find an hour too long.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies by individual. Some clients come for a short block (6–10 sessions) to work on a specific goal, while others benefit from ongoing support. Your therapist will discuss a plan that suits you.
Are parents or partners involved in sessions?
Yes. Collaboration is key.
For children: We coach parents on how to support communication at home.
For adults: Partners or family members are welcome to join if you wish.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. While we accept them, they are not required. You can book directly with us.

Practical Information

Where are sessions held?
In-Person: Rathfarnham (Dublin) or Blackpool (Cork City).
Online: Via secure video link (where appropriate).
Is there a payment plan?
Yes. We offer flexible payment options, including spreading costs across therapy blocks. We also accept Klarna to split payments over 3 months.
Can I combine SLT with other therapies?
Yes. This is often the most effective approach. Our SLTs collaborate with our psychologists and Occupational Therapists to ensure all goals work together.
Is SLT suitable for non-speaking individuals?
Absolutely! We specialise in supporting non-speaking and semi-speaking people.

We use a variety of tools to give them a voice, including:
  • Lámh (Sign language)
  • Vocabulary boards
  • High-tech apps (like TD Snap and Grid)
Do you provide reports or progress summaries?
Yes. You receive detailed initial reports and regular progress updates. These are often required for school planning or healthcare reviews.
Is AutismCare's SLT team qualified and regulated?
Yes. All our therapists are CORU-registered, Garda vetted, and hold postgraduate qualifications in autism. We adhere to strict professional development and supervision standards.

Understanding Communication Differences

What are signs my child might benefit from SLT?
SLT may be helpful if your child:
  • Has difficulty expressing wants or needs (leading to frustration).
  • Finds it hard to understand spoken instructions.
  • Wants to try alternative communication (like apps or signs).
  • Is difficult to understand (pronunciation differences).
  • Has challenges with feeding or swallowing.
Why is early SLT intervention important?
Early intervention helps in three key ways:
  1. Foundation Building: It sets up communication supports (like visual schedules) that your child can use for life.
  2. Parent Confidence: You learn your child's natural communication style early, making it easier to support them.
  3. Wellbeing: Your child learns their "voice" matters, which builds confidence and reduces frustration.
Can SLT help adults?
Yes. Many adults come to us for support with:
  • Clearer communication at work.
  • Self-advocacy (explaining their needs to others).
  • Managing social energy and sensory demands.
What if progress is slow?
Every individual's pace is different. If progress feels slow, we adjust our methods. We focus on engagement and comfort first—learning happens best when a person feels safe and understood.
Will you teach my child how to talk?
Not necessarily—and that's okay.

While many children do develop spoken language, speech is not the only way to communicate. We focus on whatever method allows your child to:
  • Express their wants and needs.
  • Connect socially with others.
  • Reduce frustration.
We support spoken language, but we don't force it if another method works better for your child.
Will using visuals stop my child from learning to talk?
No. Research confirms that using visuals or apps does not prevent speech development.

In fact, visuals often act as a bridge to speech. They help children understand language structures without the pressure to perform verbally, which can actually encourage speech to emerge naturally.
Am I neglecting speech by using visual communication?
Not at all. You are prioritizing communication.

By giving your child a way to express themselves right now (via visuals or apps), you are reducing their frustration and building their confidence. Supporting the method that works best for your child is the most effective way to help them grow.
