Initially I had been very nervous as I didn’t know what to expect, but the pre-assessment really put me at ease. The assessment process itself was structured and thorough. Everyone on the AutismCare team is kind, compassionate and neurodivergence-informed.
Dr. Janice Smith conducted my assessment, and I’m so glad I got to work with her! She has over 20 years of experience in a wide range of different therapeutic settings. She is friendly and  open, and took time to get to know me as an individual so that she could provide a report that would represent me accurately and help to meet my needs.

She absolutely adored her sessions with Ciaran. She looked forward to it every week. Ciaran made my daughter feel understood and helped her to process her diagnoses by consistently communicating with her in a way that met her needs and communication style. Ciaran also shared his brilliant insight with me each week which helped us as parents to best support our daughter.

I booked in for an adult AUDHD assessment for myself and found Dr Janice fantastic. She made me feel at ease in every session. She was so helpful throughout and answered any questions I had. Following my diagnosis she provided lots of information on further steps and supports.

The process was straightforward and efficient, I appreciated that there's an initial assessment to determine whether further consultation is needed, which felt like a respectful use of everyone's time.
From there, appointments were booked quickly and each session was an hour or less, which I found manageable. Dr. Ryan was professional throughout, and I received my diagnosis in approximately one month from the initial assessment, a turnaround I hadn't expected to be so prompt.
For anyone on the fence about seeking a diagnosis as an adult: I spent my whole life masking and feeling like something was off without knowing why. Getting that clarity has been such a relief. It's far better to know than not to know, and I'm genuinely delighted with my outcome.

I was worried that my daughter wouldn't speak as she generally shuts down with people she doesn't know but caolán especially made her feel comfortable as he was very like her brother. My daughter was 17 being diagnosed and I found it hard to find a company that didnt rely highly on info from the school as she was in secondary  school and another company told me that if they school didnt notice anything the assessment would stop. Autism Care look more closely at family life as family notice the struggles more. I highly recommend autism care.

They were both so kind and gentle with my son, they understood his challenges and did so much to help him regain his confidence in himself. My son is in his late teens so going through the process of assessment was difficult for him, Luis and Kate were both very empathetic and focussed very much on the positives of a diagnosis. Luis did the ASD assessment and put my son at ease from the start.  He is very helpful and answers any questions I had. He was calm and friendly with my son who was nervous.

We met Rachel the S&L therapist as part of assessment and went on to book her for S&L therapy for my 4 year old non verbal son. Rachel was lovely and my son got on with Rachel straight away. She is very calm and goes at the child’s pace.

I would highly recommend the clinic to any future clients. From booking the appointments to theraphy and assessments I found all staff very pleasant and accommodating.

After a disappointing experience with a previous assessment provider, I was initially very skeptical, especially when I saw that AutismCare offered an appointment within the same week, whereas other places had long waiting lists. But from the very first appointment in January, my experience was fantastic.

The team was not only professional but also extremely kind and patient with both me and my son. They took the time to explain everything thoroughly, ensuring I understood every step of the process. The assessment was structured in four stages, with payment made per stage, which felt very transparent and fair.

What impressed me most was that I received the final report exactly as promised on February 5th. The whole process was smooth and efficient, and I truly felt supported throughout. Luis was particularly wonderful in explaining the report in detail, which gave me clarity and peace of mind.

One of the main reasons that I was drawn to Autism Care is that the diagnosis is accepted by the HSE. I was willing to make the journey as long as I didn't have to talk to the lady from galway...

 Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My experience at each interaction with Psychologist Lisa Keane @ Autism Care was nothing if not extremely positive. From my initial, tentative enquiries on the phone, through to the pre-assessment, onwards to the 2 full assessments and then culminating in my results, and final report, I was treated with dignity, respect and understanding by Lisa.

Throughout the whole process, I was provided with ample space, and time, to answer all of the questions. I never felt rushed. Lisa was a consumate professional. She struck a perfect balance between attending to the process of my assessments with extreme diligence and thoughtfulness, to creating a space where I perceived she genuinely cared deeply about her responsibility as a Psychologist, who is tasked with the responsibility of providing life altering information her client. I do not doubt that she takes her role very seriously.

The most helpful aspect of the whole assessment process for me, was Lisa's ability, and willingness, to provide me with insight, in language I could understand. Her explanation of how she determined my results was very comforting.  To assist an individual to arrive at an understanding that they may not necessarily have been able to reach without guidance, is a unique and useful skill. Lisa posseses such a skill.

About Occupational Therapy

What is occupational therapy (OT)?

Occupational therapy focuses on helping individuals engage in meaningful daily activities (occupations) — self-care, school/work tasks, sensory regulation, fine motor tasks, planning, and executive functioning. For autistic clients, OT helps to understand occupational engagement. This can lead to developing supports for sensory processing, building on motor skills, sense of competence, and daily life skills like sleeping, eating, washing and dressing (to name just a few).

Who provides the OT service?

Our OT services are delivered by CORU registered, garda-vetted, experienced occupational therapists with specialist training in autism and sensory integration. They work as part of the Multi-Disciplinary Team at AutismCare, coordinating closely with psychologists, speech & language therapists, and other specialists. Our occupational therapy team has extensive experience working across both the public and private healthcare sectors.

How does our OT service work?

We begin with an intake interview to understand your strengths, challenges, routines, and goals. If we feel OT is a good fit, we discuss what sessions will entail. Usually the focus is on understanding how your child engages in occupations (or activities of daily life). That's followed by in-person play-based, child-led sessions where the OT interacts and or observes your child at play. We can then help you and your child to develop ways of finding appropriate support for occupational engagement at home, school or any life context.

Is OT done online or in person?

Hands-on assessments, sensory observations, and certain interventions are delivered in person at our clinics (Rathfarnham, Dublin, Cork City). In some cases, it may be appropriate to undertake some sessions online, it is worth discussing this directly with your occupational therapist at AutismCare.

What age range is OT available for?

Our occupational therapy service is primarily for children, however adults can also avail of the service if they contact us directly by phone. Our approach and goals vary depending on age, profile, and life stage.

How long until I see results from OT?

It depends on the starting point, frequency of sessions, and your consistency with home-based strategies. Many children see noticeable gains in specific areas (e.g. routine, sensory control) within 6–12 weeks.

Will OT interfere with other therapies?

No. Our OT team collaborates with psychologists, SLTs, and others to ensure strategies are integrated, consistent, and supportive across settings. Findings and progress can also be shared with your child's GP.

Process & Logistics

How do I start OT at AutismCare?

You or your clinician can request an OT referral once your assessment is underway or completed. We'll schedule an intake evaluation to understand your goals and baseline.

How many OT sessions are needed?

It depends on goals, severity, and progress. Some clients may require a short course (4-8 sessions); others may need ongoing therapy with tapering follow-ups over a longer period of time, your occupational therapist at AutismCare should be able to advise you here.

How long is each OT session?

Standard OT sessions last 45 to 60 minutes. Some may be shorter or extended depending on the activity and client needs.

Can OT be done remotely?

In some cases this can be appropriate for strategy coaching, planning, and consultation. However, in-person sessions are preferred for early sessions, observation of play or shared experience, physical tasks, and direct intervention.

Do I need to bring anything to OT sessions?

Bring any relevant assessment or reports (if non-AutismCare reports), and video/photographs of your daily routines. If you use any assistive devices or tools (e.g. writing aids, communication devices), bring those too.

Practical & Support Info

Is OT covered by insurance?

Often yes. Depending on your insurance plan. We can provide invoices, registration numbers, and clinical codes to support your claim.

Is there a payment plan for OT?

Yes. Flexible payment options are available; sessions can be structured to allow easier payment scheduling.

Can I claim tax relief on OT?

Yes. Many clients can claim ~20% back as a medical expense from Revenue. We provide necessary documentation.

What if I need OT plus other therapies?

That's fine. We will coordinate schedules and ensure intervention plans complement rather than conflict.

Do you support with Housing Adaptation Grants?

We do not provide assessments or reports for Housing Adaptation Grant applications.

Our Occupational Therapy service focuses on delivering clinical assessments and therapeutic support. To ensure care is appropriate and effective, all services are delivered within this clinical framework.

If you are seeking support for a Housing Adaptation Grant, this typically requires a home-based assessment and documentation specific to housing needs, which sits outside the scope of our service.
