Step 2

Intake consultation with parents

You don't need to bring anything to your initial session, but you may find it helpful to note down your child's strengths and challenges in daily activities, any sensory preferences or concerns you've noticed, gather any relevant background information (such as previous reports from school or other therapists), and bring examples of tools or aids your child currently uses if applicable.

Intake interview with parents
Step 3

Play-based assessment sessions

Occupational therapy sessions are conducted through interactive, child-led play to understand your child's engagement with activities. Sessions typically last 45-60 minutes.

All appointments are held in person at our Rathfarnham (Dublin) or Blackpool (Cork) clinics in a calm, responsive setting. Your child can participate however feels natural to them, and we move at their own pace with our understanding team.

Play-based assessment sessions
Step 4

Intervention & skill building

Your child will engage in tailored therapy sessions focusing on motor skills development, sensory processing support, daily living skills, and emotional regulation. Each session builds on your child's natural strengths using engaging, purposeful activities that feel meaningful rather than corrective.

The AuDHD Paradox: A Closer Look

Understanding the unique internal experience of having both Autism and ADHD.

Routine vs Novelty Conflict

Routine vs. Novelty

The Autistic side often craves predictability and routine. The ADHD side is driven by a need for novelty and stimulation. This creates a cycle of establishing routines only to feel suffocated by them.

Find Clarity →
Masking Traits

Why It's Often Missed

ADHD traits can "mask" Autistic traits, and vice versa. Up until recently, it was not considered possible for someone to be both Autistic and an ADHDer. This often leads to incomplete diagnoses.

The Hidden Cost

Living with this internal tug-of-war is exhausting, leading to burnout and anxiety. Standard advice for just one neurotype often doesn't work. Understanding your AuDHD profile is key.

Facts & Insights on AuDHD in Ireland

Understanding the landscape of neurodivergence, backed by recent data.

A Hidden Population

18.7%

Contrary to the idea that being neurodivergent is rare, especially among adults, the CSO Irish Health Survey 2024 reported that nearly one-fifth of adults in Ireland are either formally identified or self-identify as neurodivergent.

Graph showing prevalence statistics
Identification Gap Icon

The Identification Gap

According to recent data, while 2% of adults are formally identified as being ADHDers, up to 9% of adults either self identify as or suspect that they are ADHD, without going through a formal diagnostic process.

Significant Overlap Icon

Significant Overlap

Studies indicate 30% to 50% of Autistic individuals also meet criteria for ADHD.

Service Barriers Icon

Service Barriers

No public pathway exists for adult autism assessments, and "Shared Care" for ADHD meds is often refused.

Education Rights Icon

For DARE, ADHD reports must be 3 years old, unlike Autism reports which have no age limit.

AuDHD ASSESSMENT FAQ'S
Everything you need to know about our combined Autism + ADHD assessment for adults.

About the Assessment

What is an AuDHD assessment?
An AuDHD assessment is a pathway that assesses both Autism and ADHD together, so you don't end up with half an explanation or two disconnected opinions.
Who is this assessment for?
It's for adults who:
  • Strongly suspect both Autism and ADHD, or
  • Feel like they're constantly pulled between routine vs novelty, focus vs overwhelm, and structure vs impulsivity.
Why is a combined assessment better than doing two separate ones?
Because separate assessments often misread overlap:
  • Autistic hyperfocus can look like ADHD "inattention"
  • ADHD impulsivity can hide autistic social/communication differences
Our integrated approach is designed to disentangle what's what so you get a clear, coherent outcome.
What if I only meet criteria for Autism or only ADHD?
That's a common outcome. This is a diagnostic process — if you meet criteria for only one neurotype, your report will reflect that and your recommendations will be tailored accordingly.

Getting Started

What's the first step?
Start with our dedicated online AuDHD Pre-Assessment (€89) — a low-cost, low-pressure entry point.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly.
How soon can I be seen?
We have no waitlist and typically offer availability within the next 7 days.
Is the assessment online?
Yes. Appointments are held via Zoom, and you can attend with your camera on or off — whatever helps you feel most comfortable.

The Team

Who conducts the assessment?
Our assessments are carried out by experienced PSI Chartered Psychologists, and our wider team includes CORU-registered professionals.

Results & Reports

What exactly do I receive at the end?
You receive:
  • A detailed diagnostic conclusion for both Autism and ADHD
  • A separate written report for both, with clear explanations and practical recommendations
  • A video feedback call for both — so you're not left decoding the report on your own
Is the report recognised in Ireland?
Yes. Our reports are compiled by PSI Chartered Psychologists and are recognised by Irish schools, universities (DARE/disability support), and workplaces for reasonable accommodations.
Can I use the report for DARE / disability supports?
Yes. Our reports are used for DARE and disability supports.

Important note: For DARE, ADHD reports must be within 3 years, while Autism reports do not have the same age limit.

Cost & Payment

How much does it cost?
You can start with the €89 Pre-Assessment. Full pathway pricing is €2,737.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes. We offer Klarna so you can split payments into interest-free installments (where available per stage).
Can I claim tax back or use insurance?
Often, yes:
  • Many clients can claim 20% back via Revenue medical expense tax relief (if eligible).
  • Private health insurance reimbursement may be possible depending on your plan — we provide the documentation you need (receipts, PSI/CORU numbers).

Practical Information

Is it confidential?
Yes — our service is 100% confidential and your information is handled in line with GDPR.
What's your cancellation/refund policy?
  • A full refund is only available if you cancel before any work has been completed.
  • Cancellations within 24 hours of an appointment are not refundable.
  • Please refer to our full cancellation policy for the full breakdown of our policy.
Is this a crisis or emergency mental health service?
No. We don't provide crisis services. If you're in immediate danger or need urgent support, contact emergency services or your local crisis team.

Best Next Step (For Most People)

If you're unsure, don't overthink it: start with the €89 AuDHD Pre-Assessment. It's the fastest way to get clarity on what you actually need — without committing to the full pathway upfront.

Occupational Therapy FAQ's

About Occupational Therapy

What is occupational therapy (OT)?
Occupational therapy focuses on helping individuals engage in meaningful daily activities (occupations) — self-care, school/work tasks, sensory regulation, fine motor tasks, planning, and executive functioning. For autistic clients, OT helps to understand occupational engagement. This can lead to developing supports for sensory processing, building on motor skills, sense of competence, and daily life skills like sleeping, eating, washing and dressing (to name just a few).
Who provides the OT service?
Our OT services are delivered by CORU registered, garda-vetted, experienced occupational therapists with specialist training in autism and sensory integration. They work as part of the Multi-Disciplinary Team at AutismCare, coordinating closely with psychologists, speech & language therapists, and other specialists. Our occupational therapy team has extensive experience working across both the public and private healthcare sectors.
How does our OT service work?
We begin with an intake interview to understand your strengths, challenges, routines, and goals. If we feel OT is a good fit, we discuss what sessions will entail. Usually the focus is on understanding how your child engages in occupations (or activities of daily life). That's followed by in-person play-based, child-led sessions where the OT interacts and or observes your child at play. We can then help you and your child to develop ways of finding appropriate support for occupational engagement at home, school or any life context.
Is OT done online or in person?
Hands-on assessments, sensory observations, and certain interventions are delivered in person at our clinics (Rathfarnham, Dublin, Cork City). In some cases, it may be appropriate to undertake some sessions online, it is worth discussing this directly with your occupational therapist at AutismCare.
What age range is OT available for?
Our occupational therapy service is primarily for children, however adults can also avail of the service if they contact us directly by phone. Our approach and goals vary depending on age, profile, and life stage.

Benefits & Goals

What areas can OT help with?
  • Sensory processing and modulation (e.g. over- or under-responsivity)
  • Gross and fine motor coordination
  • Handwriting, keyboarding, drawing, manipulation skills
  • Planning, organisation, time management, task initiation
  • Daily living skills (e.g. dressing, grooming, eating)
  • Fatigue management, energy conservation
  • Adaptive strategies & assistive technology (tools, modifications)
How long until I see results?
It depends on the starting point, frequency of sessions, and your consistency with home-based strategies. Many children see noticeable gains in specific areas (e.g. routine, sensory control) within 6–12 weeks.
Will OT interfere with other therapies?
No. Our OT team collaborates with psychologists, SLTs, and others to ensure strategies are integrated, consistent, and supportive across settings. Findings and progress can also be shared with your child's GP.

Process & Logistics

How do I start OT at AutismCare?
You or your clinician can request an OT referral once your assessment is underway or completed. We'll schedule an intake evaluation to understand your goals and baseline.
How many sessions are needed?
It depends on goals, severity, and progress. Some clients may require a short course (4-8 sessions); others may need ongoing therapy with tapering follow-ups over a longer period of time, your occupational therapist at AutismCare should be able to advise you here.
How long is each session?
Standard OT sessions last 45 to 60 minutes. Some may be shorter or extended depending on the activity and client needs.
Can OT be done remotely?
In some cases this can be appropriate for strategy coaching, planning, and consultation. However, in-person sessions are preferred for early sessions, observation of play or shared experience, physical tasks, and direct intervention.
Do I need to bring anything to OT sessions?
Bring any relevant assessment or reports (if non-AutismCare reports), and video/photographs of your daily routines. If you use any assistive devices or tools (e.g. writing aids, communication devices), bring those too.

Practical & Support Info

Is OT covered by insurance?
Often yes. Depending on your insurance plan. We can provide invoices, registration numbers, and clinical codes to support your claim.
Is there a payment plan?
Yes. Flexible payment options are available; sessions can be structured to allow easier payment scheduling.
Can I claim tax relief?
Yes. Many clients can claim ~20% back as a medical expense from Revenue. We provide necessary documentation.
What if I need OT plus other therapies?
That's fine. We will coordinate schedules and ensure intervention plans complement rather than conflict.
Do you support with Housing Adaptation Grants?
We do not provide assessments or reports for Housing Adaptation Grant applications.

Our Occupational Therapy service focuses on delivering clinical assessments and therapeutic support. To ensure care is appropriate and effective, all services are delivered within this clinical framework.

If you are seeking support for a Housing Adaptation Grant, this typically requires a home-based assessment and documentation specific to housing needs, which sits outside the scope of our service.
