Our approach

Supporting today's autistic and neuro-diverse youth

Challenges facing neuro-divergent young people come from many sources, school, social concerns, self-esteem, stress, anxiety, depression, transitions, sensory differences, and the long road towards independence.

Our therapists have extensive experience working with youth and the challenges that come with them. We work from a neuro-affirming perspective, celebrating diversity and strengths while addressing the specific needs this population faces.

Why AutismCare.ie

Care that's youth-specialist and family-aware

Not adult therapy adapted for kids. Real youth-specific clinical experience, with caregivers built into the model from day one.

Youth-Specialist Therapists

Clinicians with extensive experience working with neuro-divergent young people, not generalists who occasionally see youth.

Neuro-Affirming Approach

We celebrate diversity and strengths first, addressing what's genuinely challenging without trying to make your child mask or fit a template.

Family-Focused Care

The caregiver-child relationship is the foundation. We design care that supports both the young person and the family around them.

Youth-tailored interventions

The challenges young people actually face

Neuro-divergent youth carry a lot, and the source isn't always one thing. Our work meets the young person where they are, across every part of life.

  • School & social pressuresSchool challenges, social concerns, self-esteem and the day-to-day of fitting in.
  • Mental health & regulationStress, anxiety, depression and sensory differences that affect daily life.
  • Transitions & independenceTransition difficulties, new schools, milestones, and the long build toward independence.
Family-focused services

Caregivers are active participants, not bystanders

Our therapists engage with the youth from a family-focused perspective, working to make sure the caregiver-child relationship is supported throughout.

Much of the direct work may be one-to-one sessions with the young person, but we encourage caregivers to be active participants in the process, in the way that fits your family.

Family sessions

Young person and caregivers in the room together, building shared understanding.

Caregiver-only sessions

Dedicated space for parents and guardians to work through their own piece.

Phone consultations

Occasional check-ins between sessions, quick guidance when it's needed.

In session

What to expect in therapy

Our youth therapy is centred on understanding and addressing the unique experiences faced by today's neuro-diverse young people. Sessions tend to focus on three things:

1

Easing what feels overwhelming

Working with caregivers and youth to identify what feels overwhelming or challenging, and finding ways to make those areas feel more manageable.

2

Building self-understanding

Fostering self-understanding and self-compassion in the young person, by exploring their unique traits, preferences and strengths.

3

Stronger caregiver-youth bonds

Empowering caregivers and youth to engage and interact with one another in ways that build stronger, more attuned relationships.

FAQs

FAQs about youth therapy

Quick answers to the questions caregivers ask us most often before starting.

Do caregivers participate in sessions?

Yes, caregivers are active participants. Depending on what fits your family, this can look like family sessions with the young person and caregivers together, caregiver-only sessions, or occasional phone consultations between sessions.

Does my child need a formal autism or neuro-diversity diagnosis to start?

No. We support young people whether they have a formal diagnosis, are in the process of assessment, or are exploring the possibility of neuro-divergence. Care is shaped around the individual, not the label.

What kinds of challenges can therapy help with?

The youth we work with carry a range of challenges, school difficulties, social concerns, self-esteem, stress, anxiety, depression, transitions, sensory differences, and the build toward independence. Sessions are tailored to what's most pressing for your young person.

How does online therapy work for young people?

Sessions are delivered entirely online, from the comfort of home. Many young people find a familiar environment easier to engage in than a clinic. Camera-on or camera-off is the young person's choice, and we work with caregivers to set up a session space that feels right.

How will the caregiver-child relationship be supported?

The relationship sits at the heart of the work. We empower caregivers and youth to engage with one another in ways that build understanding and connection, both in joint sessions and in the day-to-day strategies we work on together.

Do we need to commit to a set number of sessions?

No. We start with a consultation to understand what your family needs, and then plan from there. You can pause or stop sessions at any time, the right pace is the one that works for your young person.
