Questions

Before you book

What age can be assessed?

For dyslexia, dyscalculia and other specific learning difficulties, from age 7 or second class onwards, once there has been enough formal teaching for results to be reliable. If your child is 5 or 6, please call us on 021 204 0250 before booking and we’ll talk through whether an assessment is right yet. We can’t assess children under 5. Gifted and twice-exceptional profiling is also available from age 7. There’s no upper age limit for adults.

Where do assessments take place?

This service is for Cork and surrounding areas only. Stage 2, the assessment itself, is in person at our clinic: Floor 2, Atrium Business Centre, Blackpool Business Park, Cork, T23 T2VY. Stage 1 and Stage 3 take place online.

Is a dyscalculia assessment included?

It can be. If the intake consultation shows it’s clinically indicated, we may also carry out a dyscalculia assessment as part of the same fee.

Does my child need to come to Stage 1?

No. Stage 1 is online with parents or guardians. You will receive a link to a questionnaire to pass on to your child’s teacher, helping us understand how your child learns in the classroom. Your child only attends Stage 2. Adults take part in every stage themselves.

What happens on the assessment day?

There’s nothing to revise and nothing to pass or fail. Tasks are paced to age and stamina with breaks built in, and a parent can stay if a young child is anxious. When appropriate, we finish by sharing strengths and first strategies with them.

Do we need to prepare anything?

Before Stage 1, it helps to gather any previous reports, such as speech and language, occupational therapy or earlier psychological assessments.

Will the report work for RACE or DARE?

Reports are written by a psychologist and include the standardised attainment scores these schemes look for. Eligibility is decided by the SEC for RACE, and by the DARE scheme, using their own criteria. Timing matters too, so see the guidance above.

What if the assessment doesn’t find dyslexia?

You’ll still come away with a clear picture of strengths and difficulties, and practical recommendations for home, school or work.

Can I claim the cost back?

You may be able to claim 20% back through tax relief on health expenses. On the full €849 that’s up to €169. We provide receipts for every stage, but can’t guarantee a rebate, so please check your own eligibility.
