You must meet all four criteria to be eligible for Disability Allowance in Ireland.
You must be at least 16 years old and under state pension age (66). You transition from Domiciliary Care Allowance at age 16.
Your disability (including autism) must have lasted or be expected to last at least one year. Medical evidence is required.
Your disability must substantially restrict your ability to work. You'll need functional impact documentation from a healthcare professional.
Your income and savings must be below the set threshold. The means test changes regularly. Check gov.ie for current limits.

Follow these five steps to submit your Disability Allowance application to the Department of Social Protection.
Obtain a comprehensive autism assessment report from a registered healthcare professional (psychologist, psychiatrist, or medical doctor). AutismCare provides PSI-registered adult assessments and AuDHD evaluations.
Download the form from gov.ie/en/service/disability-allowance/ and fill in all required sections. Include your personal details, contact information, and details of any dependants.
Submit assessment report plus a functional impact letter describing how autism limits ability to work. A cover letter explaining your autism identification can strengthen the application.
Post your completed form, assessment report, and supporting documents to the DSP office (address on the form). Keep copies for your records. Consider sending via registered post.
The DSP will assess your application (typically 8–12 weeks) and notify you of their decision. If declined, you can appeal within 21 days. Many appeals succeed with additional evidence.
