Who Qualifies for a Special Class Placement

Your child must meet all four criteria to be eligible for a special class place in Ireland.

Formal Autism Diagnosis

A diagnosis from a registered Consultant Psychiatrist, Clinical Psychologist, or other qualified professional. Public or private reports are both accepted.

Explicit Placement Recommendation

The professional report must specifically recommend a special class placement as the most appropriate setting. A diagnosis alone is not enough.

Appropriate Age for Placement

Your child must be of the right age for the primary or post-primary school they are applying to. Transition planning should start 18 months ahead.

NCSE Letter of Eligibility

Parents must submit the Parents Notify form and receive a Letter of Eligibility from the NCSE. This document is required by every school you apply to.

The 1st October Deadline Don't Miss It!

Parents must complete the NCSE Parents Notify form by 1st October of the year before intended school entry. Missing this deadline significantly reduces available special class places and can push your application into a late-allocation pathway with fewer guarantees.

How to Apply for a Special Class Placement

Follow these six steps to secure a special class place for the following school year.

1

Secure a Formal Diagnostic Report

The report must come from a registered clinician and must recommend special class placement explicitly. If your child is on a public waiting list, a private assessment with AutismCare can deliver a report within 8-10 weeks, in time for the October deadline.

2

Submit the Parents Notify Form

Complete the NCSE Parents Notify online form before 1st October of the year preceding intended entry. Upload the professional diagnostic report as supporting evidence.

3

Receive the NCSE Letter of Eligibility

This document confirms your child qualifies for a special class placement. It is issued typically between October and December and will be required by every school you apply to.

4

Identify Schools with Special Classes

Use the NCSE School Information Map to find schools in your area offering autism classes. Apply to multiple schools to maximise your chances, as demand often exceeds supply.

5

Visit and Apply to Schools

Attend open days and ask about staff autism training, integration practices, sensory environment, and transition support. Submit enrolment applications with the Letter of Eligibility, the diagnostic report, and any additional school-specific forms.

6

Accept the Placement Offer

Formal enrolment offers are typically issued between January and March. Accept the offer from your preferred school and prepare for the September start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about special class placement in Irish mainstream schools.

A special class is a classroom within a mainstream primary or post-primary school designed for students whose needs cannot be fully met in a standard classroom. Autism classes typically have 6 pupils, 1 teacher, and a minimum of 2 Special Needs Assistants. Students are integrated with mainstream classes for subjects and activities where appropriate.
Parents must submit the NCSE Parents Notify form by 1st October of the year before intended school entry. Missing this deadline significantly reduces the available special class places. The Letter of Eligibility issued by the NCSE is then required by every school you apply to.
Your child needs a formal autism diagnosis from a registered Consultant Psychiatrist or Clinical Psychologist, a professional report that explicitly recommends special class placement, and a Letter of Eligibility from the NCSE. A diagnosis alone is not enough - the report must specifically recommend this placement.
Under Section 37A of the Education Act, the Minister for Education can require a school to open a special class. Families can also apply for the Home Tuition Grant while waiting, and appeal enrolment refusals under Section 29 of the Education Act.
Yes. Special classes operate within publicly funded mainstream schools and are free at the point of delivery. Standard school costs such as uniform and books still apply.
Yes. Integration is a core NCSE principle and will be set by each school based on their own guidelines.
Schools typically require the Letter of Eligibility from the NCSE, the professional diagnostic report (less than two years old is preferred), and a completed enrolment application. Some schools request an assessment of your child's current supports and transition needs.
