Your Questions Answered

About the Assessment

Who conducts the assessment?
A chartered clinical psychologist specialising in autism leads your assessment, sometimes paired with another specialist if deemed necessary by the clinical psychologist.
Is the assessment online or in person?
Adult assessments at AutismCare are usually conducted entirely online, giving you flexibility and comfort. You don't need to travel; sessions are held via secure video conferencing.
What age do you assess?
Our adult assessment applies to individuals aged 18 and over.
What if I already have other diagnoses or conditions?
We take a holistic view. Any existing diagnoses (e.g. anxiety, ADHD, mood conditions) are integrated into the evaluation. Your report will reflect how these interact with autistic features and suggest pathways accordingly.
What diagnostic criteria and tools are used?
We use recognised frameworks (e.g. DSM-5) and validated clinical assessment instruments alongside detailed interviews, self-report measures, developmental history, and clinical observation via video.
Do you have a waitlist?
All initial consultations are able to be seen within one week. We aim to always fully complete the adult assessment process within 4-6 weeks where possible.
Will the assessment highlight my strengths too?
Absolutely. Our philosophy is neuroaffirmative - we acknowledge and help you address the challenges of being autistic in a world which doesn't always accommodate your needs, but we also help you in identifying your cognitive, social, sensory, and adaptive strengths, special interests, and preferred ways of interacting.

Recognition & Support

Is your diagnosis accepted by public bodies / health systems?
Yes. All our psychologists are professionally qualified and registered (e.g. with PSI), which means that your diagnosis is recognised under Irish systems for accessing support.
Can I use the report for workplace or educational accommodations?
Yes. After your assessment, you'll receive a detailed report and can request supporting letters to present to employers, universities, or services.
Is private health insurance accepted?
Often yes, depending on your insurer. We supply all required documentation (PSI numbers, receipts, clinical codes) to support your claim.
Can I claim tax relief?
Potentially yes. Many clients may claim ~20% back on health-related expenses from Revenue. We provide full invoices and registration numbers to support your claim.
What happens after diagnosis?
You'll receive a detailed feedback session and a full comprehensive written report. The report includes tailored recommendations (therapy, workplace accommodations, self-management strategies) and can serve as a roadmap for next steps. We also offer support aftercare services at AutismCare.
Can autistic adults access disability supports?
Yes in some cases. Depending on their functional impacts, individuals may qualify for supports such as Disability Allowance or other social welfare schemes. We can advise you on documentation needed. Disability Allowance is a weekly social welfare payment from the Department of Social Protection for individuals aged 16 or over who have a disability that substantially restricts their ability to take part in work that would otherwise be suitable for someone of their age, experience, and qualifications. Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference, not a mental illness or cognitive impairment. Disability Allowance is not a judgment on a person's abilities or potential. Instead, it is a form of support that can help individuals with a disability navigate daily life and access the resources they need to thrive. For up-to-date information on eligibility criteria, how to apply, and what documentation is required, you can visit the Citizens Information website: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social-welfare/disability-and-illness/
Who oversees quality and standards at AutismCare?
All clinical processes, standards and assessments are supervised by our Clinical Director, Dr Sam Gower. Dr Gower is a Clinical Psychologist with over 17 years experience registered both in Ireland and the UK. Dr Gower has previously held senior Clinical Director roles in the NHS, Pieta House and also held roles as Principal Clinical Psychologist for a number of clinics that specialise in the deliverance of services for adults and children with intellectual disability, autism and or acquired brain injury, who may also have other complex needs including mental health difficulties. All clinical staff at AutismCare must meet stringent professional and educational standards, be appropriately certified by their respective professional bodies and hold specialised training in autism, along with continuous professional development requirements. AutismCare also is governed by a Board of Directors and undertakes external independent healthcare audits once every two years.

Process & Timeline

What is the first step?
You begin with a pre-assessment consultation (≈60 min) via video call. This involves an initial discussion of your history, concerns, and whether a full assessment is suitable.
How long does the full assessment take?
From first contact to delivery of the report, the process typically takes 4 to 6 weeks.
What are the steps included?
• Pre-assessment consultation (video) • Completion of questionnaires, background/developmental history • Assessment sessions (interviews, observational tasks via video) • Feedback session and report delivery • Post-assessment recommendations and support planning
How many sessions are involved?
Usually 4 sessions spread over several weeks with clinical questionnaires to be filled out as required separately to these sessions.
Do I need to submit prior reports or records?
It is recommended if you have prior psychological, neurological, or developmental assessments, medical records, or reports, these help inform your evaluation and avoid redundant testing.
Do I need a GP referral?
While referrals from GP's are accepted, no referral is required. You can self-refer. We begin with a pre-assessment consultation.
Is both video observation and self-report involved?
Yes. We combine structured interview, observational behaviour (via video), and validated questionnaires/self-report tools to get a comprehensive view. If you would like to use fidgets, stim, include a pet or use text chat where needed this can also help some individuals throughout the process.
Can someone else (partner/family) join sessions?
Yes. You may invite a trusted person (partner, family, friend) to join parts of sessions or to provide collateral input, if you prefer.

Practical Information

How much does an adult assessment cost?
The AutismCare full adult assessment is €1,887. Payment plans are available to support accessibility.
Is there a payment plan?

When will I receive the report?
Final written reports are typically delivered within a few days (or up to 1–2 weeks) after the feedback session, depending on complexity.

AutismCare adult assessments are fully online, so you can participate from your home or another private location.
How is privacy handled?
We maintain strict confidentiality. Sessions are encrypted, and data is stored securely in compliance with data protection laws.

Do I need any special equipment?
A stable internet connection, a computer or tablet with camera and microphone, and a private quiet space are all that's required.

Understanding Adult Autism

Who should consider an adult autism assessment?
If you suspect you are autistic or otherwise neurodivergent, and you are seeking confirmation of this, the assessment and identification process is for you. People choose to go through assessment for various reasons. For some people it helps them make sense of their past experiences, it helps them deepen their understanding of their self and their needs. Also formal assessment can help in getting reasonable accommodations in the workplace. We collaborate with you in exploring how your interests, sensory experience, interaction or communication style fits with descriptions of autistic experience. We undertake that autism is an identity and not just a set of characteristics.
Can autism be missed until adulthood?
Yes. Many adults "mask" traits or make accommodations that hide their autistic profile. A comprehensive assessment can uncover underlying patterns even when previous life functioning has covered it. Also our understanding of autism has changed over the years as autistic research has caught up with autistic people's discussions of their experiences. We no longer think of autism in terms of "deficits" but see it as a different way of experiencing the world.
What if I'm not identified as autistic?
You will still receive a full report outlining your cognitive, behavioral, emotional profile, and suggestions for supports or alternative diagnoses if relevant.
Will the assessment change how I see myself?
Often yes. Many clients say the process offers pathways to self-understanding, acceptance, and reframing experiences in a more compassionate light.
Does autism run in families?
Yes, there is a strong genetic component. Many adults discover family members with related traits once assessed.
